John Eppson Harris was born March 6, 1941, to the late Eddie Harris and Ceretha Epps, in Gainesville Florida. He died at home on June 7, 2021.
He leaves behind a wife of 30 years Jeraleen Harris. Children: John H. Harris (deceased); Christine Harris, Detroit, MI; Albuletha "Sis" Jones (Terry Jones deceased) Chiefland, FL; Eddie Harris, Jacksonville, FL; Canesha Harris (Holt Wilson), Chiefland, FL; Vicky Cotton (Kenny Cotton) Lakeland, FL; Joseph Moore, Ft Meyers, FL; Donelle Moore, Lakeland, FL. Step-children: Elizabeth McAllister, Orlando, FL; Eboni McAllister, Chicago, IL; Ernest McAllister, Miami, FL; an adoptive brother: Herbert "Pop" Harris (Alice Harris) Gainesville, FL that he loved and cherished; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
He spent his younger years in Gainesville, FL, and later moved to Detroit, Michigan to join the majority of his family. He worked for Ford motor company during the 1970s and later decided to start his own Pulp Wood Company. This was a very successful Black American-owned company during the era of entrepreneurship in Detroit when there were not a lot of Black-owned businesses. In the late 1970s, he left Detroit and joined the Agri-Chemical company, and retired in 2004. He was baptized and became a member at First United Pentecostal Church, Mulberry, FL. He enjoyed going and being a part of the congregation.
He is described as a being loving, kind, and sweet person. He was a funny man always making people laugh and loved to joke. He enjoyed being fashionable and wearing his suits. He would talk to anyone and make new friends. He loved to travel and took many trips all over the US. He will be greatly missed and loved.
Visitation will take place at Gause Funeral Home on Friday, June 18, 2021 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Funeral service will be held at First United Pentecostal Church, 303 NW 9th Avenue, Mulberry, FL 33860 at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 19, 2021. All persons attending the services must wear a face mask.
Interment will be at Wildwood Cemetery.
